Bageshwar. Many villages of Uttarakhand have been hit by disaster. One of these is Seri village of Bageshwar, which has been facing disaster for 19 years. 80 drains in the village have developed cracks in the fertile land. Four drinking water sources have dried up. Apart from this, 30 houses are in danger. 18 families are still forced to live under the shadow of danger. While talking to Local 18, former Sarpanch of the village Laxman Singh Dhami says that the people of the village are forced to live under the shadow of fear. He accused the government and administration of neglect.
Laxman Singh Dhami said that since 2005 in Ghadi Tok and since 2013 in Dholuda Tok, cracks have appeared in the houses here due to land subsidence. About 80 drains of fertile land are also affected and four drinking water sources have dried up. These problems have made the lives of the village residents difficult. Due to the disaster, the administration had displaced 6 families elsewhere in 2005 and some resourceful families have left the disaster affected area and settled in other places, but even now 18 families are living in the village in similar conditions and their lives are under constant threat. Danger is looming. Due to limited resources, these families cannot move to another place even if they want to and are forced to live in risky conditions.
Villagers consider it a natural disaster
The people of Seri village consider this problem as a natural disaster because there is neither any chalk mine around the village nor any kind of mining is taking place there. Apart from this, there is not much water anywhere around the area, hence the people of the village believe that the land here is not strong. Due to which this problem is arising. However, geologists are investigating the causes of subsidence and cracks.
House on the verge of breaking through cracks
Laxman Singh Dhami says that all the houses in the village are in a dilapidated condition and it has become very difficult to live here with small children. Just four years ago, his old house became unfit for habitation due to cracks, due to which he was forced to leave his ancestral home. Villager Pooja Devi says that her financial condition is not such that she can build a house somewhere else. She expects help from the government. Cracks have also appeared in their cultivable land, which is no longer safe for farming at all. Their livelihood is also being affected by this.
The situation becomes more serious in monsoon
The situation in the village becomes even more serious during monsoon. Villager Raju Dhami says that during the rainy season, water starts entering through the cracks of the houses and people are not able to sleep peacefully at night. Many times they are forced to come out of the house and see the condition of the houses.
Affected families will be displaced
Bageshwar District Magistrate Ashish Bhatgani said that a team of geologists has inspected the disaster affected areas. Efforts are being made to relocate the affected families to a safer place.
