Uttarakhand is the first state in the country to grant license to grow hemp for research and industry. In 1985, hemp fruits and flowers were banned under the anti-narcotics law. There is no restriction of any kind on dried hemp stalks and seeds. In many hilly areas like Bageshwar of Uttarakhand, strong ropes are prepared by extracting the fibers from dried hemp stalks. Kishan Malda, an expert and environment lover, told Local18 that if the youth of the hills cultivate non-intoxicating cannabis, they can earn good income from the goods produced from it.
