New Delhi. An electric car uses 6 times more minerals than an ordinary car running on petrol and diesel. With the growth of the electric vehicle segment, there will be a huge increase in the demand for silver in the country. Today, one out of every seven new cars sold in the world is electric and rapid growth is expected.
In fact, Vedanta Industries Chairman Anil Aggarwal recently said that along with minerals like copper, aluminium, lithium, cobalt and nickel, silver is also used in electric vehicles. This can create immense possibilities related to silver mining in the country. Apart from personal use, silver is also in huge demand in the electric vehicle industry. But do you know where silver is used in an electric car? If not then let us tell you…
How much silver is there in an electric car?
The use of silver in electric vehicles (EVs) is continuously increasing because silver is known to be a better conductor of electricity and corrosion resistant capabilities. In electric vehicles, silver is generally used in components like small circuits, switches and connectors.
Silver is used in EV batteries to make lightweight and strong electrical connections with other components. Most electric cars use 25–50 grams of silver, while hybrid vehicles use 18–34 grams.
Silver is used in power windows, seats and other electrical contacts. Silver is also used in high-performance electrical switches. Some high-power connectors use silver, making the electrical connection strong and durable.
Silver membrane switches are used to start the vehicle’s engine, open power windows, adjust power seats, close the power trunk, and other important safety features.
Silver in solar panels too
Silver is also used in solar panels, which are included in the charging systems of many electric vehicles. As the demand for electric vehicles is increasing, the use of silver is also increasing, and the need for it is likely to become greater in the future. It is estimated that by 2040, the use of silver in electric vehicles may increase to almost half of the global production.
