When Should the Marriage Take Place, Day or at Night?: There are many beliefs and rules in Hindu religion regarding marriage. In Sanatan Dharma, 16 rituals have been mentioned from the birth of a person till his death. Marriage is a special rite among these rites. Often some people get married during the day, while at many places it is solemnized at night. But what is its actual provision? When should marriage take place, during the day or at night? The answer to this question has been given by Jagadguru Shankaracharya Swamishree: Avamukteshwaranand Saraswati ji. Know its meaning according to the scriptures.
No Pandit will ever arrange a marriage, he will get the marriage done
A person from Kota, Rajasthan asked in his question that Should the marriage be done at night or during the day? On this Jagadguru Shankaracharya said, ‘First of all, if there is a Pandit, he will not arrange marriages, he will get the marriages done. So first you should choose your words correctly. If we talk about marriage, it has nothing to do with day and night. This is done in a stable ascendant. If the marriage takes place in a stable ascendant, it means that the marriage will last.
There is no place for divorce in Sanatan Dharma
he adds, ‘When two people join each other, their first need is to remain connected to each other for life. There is no mention in our scriptures that husband and wife can separate once they are joined. It is not written like this anywhere. In Sanatan Dharma, divorce, chhuta-chheda, alag-vilagi, you name it, it does not happen in Sanatan Dharma. Therefore, a stable marriage is sought so that the marriage remains stable. So stable ascendants come at night also, stable ascendants come during the day also. So according to the ascendant, marriage can be done anytime of the day or night. There is no idea of day and night.
Shankaracharya said, the tradition of marrying at night started after the arrival of the Mughals. (Indicative photo AI)
He further says, ‘The tradition of getting married at night started after the arrival of the Mughals. Because there were obstacles in getting married during the day. So the marriage was done at night, so that no one would know. The wedding procession used to arrive at dusk and these rituals were performed at night after seeing the fixed ascendant.
