Rudraprayag. Seeing the demand for Kiwi in the market, farmers in the hilly districts of Uttarakhand are liking the cultivation of this fruit. Hill farmers are doing kiwi gardening on a large scale. Sukhdev Pant, resident of Sayari Bhardar of Rudraprayag district, is also one of those farmers. He had seen the future of this fruit in the year 2012 itself. Sukhdev started kiwi farming that year and today he is earning good profits from it. He had planted 300 Kiwi saplings in his garden, some of which have now become trees and started bearing fruits. Along with this, he also prepares Kiwi saplings, which he sells to the farmers doing Kiwi gardening. At present they have about 10,000 Kiwi saplings available.
Sukhdev Pant told Local 18 that he started planting kiwi saplings in 2012. He once went to Nauni University in Himachal Pradesh. There were a large number of kiwi trees there, which were bearing good fruits. Both Himachal and Uttarakhand are hill states. The climate of both is similar, so he took inspiration from Himachal and started gardening Kiwi in his farm. This time his farm has yielded two quintals of kiwi.
Kiwi’s size and weight are most important
He told that in Kiwi gardening, the size and weight of the fruit has great importance. The weight of Kiwi should be 90 to 100 grams, due to which it gets good prices in the market. The weight of one kiwi ranges from 85 to 100 grams. At present he is selling kiwi in the market at Rs 30 per fruit. He sells kiwi weighing less than 80 grams at a price of Rs 20 to Rs 25.
Farmers in hilly areas will benefit
Sukhdev Pant further said that farmers are cultivating kiwi in large quantities in the hilly areas, but for this, farmers must have knowledge about its horticulture. Its trees require special attention. It is necessary to cut and prune it from time to time. Only after this the tree gives good fruits. Kiwi gardening is a profitable deal. Even wild animals do not harm it. Only when the fruits are ripe, birds damage the fruits. For this, fruits can be saved with the help of nets in the garden.
