Srinagar Garhwal. In the hilly areas of Uttarakhand, farmers are abandoning traditional farming and now taking up fruit gardening. But farmers in the hilly areas have less cultivable land. Due to which farmers are not able to do fruit gardening on a large scale. Today we are going to tell about one such technique for the farmers of hilly areas by which farmers in hilly areas can do fruit gardening on a large scale in a small space. Through the technique of intensive horticulture, farmers can earn good profits by planting fruit trees on a large scale even in small fields. Let us know what intensive gardening is. How can farmers adopt this technology? What kind of production will be obtained from this?
Dr. Jaidev Chauhan, agriculture expert of Haprek of Garhwal University, told Local 18 that farmers can do fruit gardening in hilly areas through the technique of intensive horticulture. In this gardening technique, more fruit trees can be planted in a smaller space. Through this technique, farmers in hilly areas can plant fruit trees like apple, pear, apricot, peach, guava and malta. In this technique, while planting fruits, plants have to be planted at minimum distance.
1300 trees can be planted in 1 acre
In the ordinary type of gardening method, the distance from plant to plant is 10 meters, in which about 100 plants are planted in 1 hectare. But in intensive gardening, the distance from plant to plant has to be kept at 2.5 to 3 meters. With this, around 1300 saplings can be planted in one hectare. For intensive gardening, farmers already have to make marks in the fields according to the distance. Trees have to be planted accordingly. For this, such varieties of trees have to be selected whose roots do not go too deep and are not too large in size. Or we can say that dwarf species of trees have to be selected. You can easily get these varieties with the help of any nursery.
Keep these things in mind in intensive gardening
While doing intensive gardening, when the plant starts growing, then cut it when it is about 70 cm in height. After two to three months, strong branches start developing in the plant. Fruits emerge from the new branches of the tree. So let them develop. Trees have to be cut and pruned 3 to 4 times a year. Whereas in intensive gardening, the height of the plants is small, hence farmers can also cultivate seasonal vegetables in the space between the trees.
Use this variety of apple
Apple gardening can be done in hilly areas in intensive horticulture. Because the trend of intensive apple gardening is becoming quite popular in the hilly areas. In this, M 99 variety of apple can be taken, because its height is 10 to 12 feet tall and it has to be pruned three to four times a year. This apple variety starts bearing fruits in 3 years in intensive gardening. This variety starts giving more production in less time.
