Dehradun. Kabul House is located near Survey Chowk in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, where the family of the ruler of Afghanistan once lived. Now it is being made a parking zone for parking arrangements in the city. Dehradun district administration is making every possible effort to ensure smooth traffic arrangements in the city. New places are being identified for parking in the city. Under this, the work of making parking in Kabul House has started. About 285 vehicles can be parked here. Work on this project is going on at a fast pace with a budget of Rs 99.35 lakh.
Historian Lokesh Odhi told Local 18 about this that when Afghan King Mohammad Yakub Khan was exiled during the Anglo-Afghan War, the British brought him to Bala Hisar in Mussoorie. He used to feel cold here during winters, so Kabul House at Survey Chowk in Dehradun was made his winter house. To monitor them, soldiers were deployed by building a post there, which is today being operated as Karanpur post. Where today Bijli’s office is, used to be his guest house and the area near the IITD auditorium used to be his court.
Kabul House cost around Rs 400 crore
Harsh Chawla, who lives near Survey Chowk in Dehradun, told Local 18 that he has seen this area changing a lot. He had heard from the elders that in the year 1879, Kabul House was built in Dehradun for the ruler of Afghanistan Mohammad Yakub Khan, in which he used to live with his family, but when he left from here, some people from here settled there. In November 2023, the government got the encroachers to vacate it. The cost of the approximately 145 year old Kabul House is said to be around Rs 400 crore, an initiative is being taken to demolish it and make it a parking zone. This will provide convenience to the people because there is a rush of vehicles day and night.
Nearby traders will get facilities
Dehradun resident Sunil Kumar said that his office is on EC Road. The customers coming to his place faced problem of parking because their challan used to be issued after some time, hence he went to the Municipal Corporation to appeal for work regarding parking. Now their customers will also be able to get convenience from the parking built by the district administration. There are many educational institutions, offices etc. around Survey Chowk. People coming there will not have to wander anywhere else for parking.
