According to the legend, Yamraj and Yamuna are the children of Sangya, the wife of Lord Surya Narayana. Yamuna loved her brother very much. She often requested him to come to her house. But Yamraj could not go to his sister’s house. On the second day of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month, Yamuna again requested Yamraj to come home.
This time Yamraj promised to come to his sister’s house. While leaving, he freed the creatures living in hell. When Yamraj reached his sister’s house, Yamuna welcomed him by applying tilak and performing aarti. Provided divine food to brother Yamraj. Pleased with his sister’s hospitality, Yamraj asked Yamuna to seek a boon.
Yamuna said that from now on you should come to my house every year on this day. Yamraj said Amen and gave priceless clothes and jewelery to Yamuna and left for Yamlok. The tradition of Bhai Dooj, the festival of love between brother and sister, began. After the puja, the sisters blessed their brother and prayed to Lord Yamraj for his happiness and long life.
