Srinagar Garhwal: Raghunath Temple in Devprayag, located in Tehri district of Uttarakhand, is a centuries-old important pilgrimage site, which is dedicated to Lord Rama. This temple is situated at the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers and the origin of Ganga. According to mythological belief, Lord Rama performed rigorous penance here. Jagadguru Shankaracharya built this temple in the 8th century, after which Lord Ram and Mother Sita are being worshiped here.

Temple Committee Chairman Krishnakant Kotiyal said that Devprayag is considered a pilgrimage site of Satyayuga, and this place is mentioned in the scriptures and Puranas. He told that in Treta Yuga, Lord Ram had killed Ravana, due to which he was accused of killing Brahma. To get freedom from this sin, Lord Rama performed rigorous penance in Devprayag, after which he got freedom from this sin.
In the Puranas, Devprayag is considered the most suitable place for penance, because here the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi occurs, and the holy Ganga also originates from here. According to beliefs, taking a dip in the Ganges destroys all sins.

Krishnakant Kotiyal said that daily worship is done in the temple. Mahabhishekam of Lord Ram is done at four in the morning, after which he is adorned. Every day Lord Ram is made to wear different clothes. Devotees from all over the country and abroad come here to have darshan, take a dip in the Ganges and leave the temple of Lord Ram with a resolve to do something new in life.

A 6.5 feet high marble idol of Lord Rama is installed in the temple, which stands without any support. The sins and sufferings of the devotees go away just by seeing this idol. Apart from this, there is also a penance place of Lord Rama in the temple complex, where he performed rigorous penance.
