Nainital: Nainital, the lake city of Uttarakhand, is known all over the world for its beautiful lake. This place is also mentioned in the Puranas where it has been called Rishi Sarovar. The water of Nainital Lake was considered as sacred as the water of Mansarovar. With time, the beautiful green mountains surrounding this lake also took the form of a concrete jungle. Indiscriminate construction took place in these hills of Nainital, the effect of which was also seen on the depth of the lake. Four years ago, the depth of the lake was measured by conducting a scientific survey of the lake. After the survey, the maximum depth of the lake was recorded at 27.15 meters. Whereas a few years ago the maximum depth of the lake was 30.15 meters. In such a situation, due to indiscriminate construction on the lake shore and silt and dirt continuously entering the lake, the depth of the lake is also decreasing.
DD Sati, Executive Engineer of the Irrigation Department, Nainital, during a special conversation with Local 18, told that in the year 2019, bathymetric analysis of Naini Lake was done by the scientists of Dehradun. In which the depth and quality of water of the lake were measured. Samples were taken by scientists after doing testing work. And the depth of the lake was also measured at many points. DD Sati said that based on the survey report, four points of the lake are the deepest, out of which the maximum depth near Pashan Devi Temple is 27.15 meters. Apart from this, the average total depth of the lake is 17.76 meters. He said that the drains recharging the lake are also cleaned by the Irrigation Department from time to time. Apart from this, the lake is also cleaned by Nainital Municipality.
Due to this the depth of the lake decreased
Nainital resident Professor Lalit Tiwari says that due to indiscriminate construction on the banks of the lake and blockage of drains recharging the lake and continuous silting of the lake, the depth of the lake started decreasing and its ecosystem also started deteriorating. Due to increase in the amount of silt in the lake, the water sources inside the lake which recharge the lake have also dried up. Due to which we may have to face problems like water crisis in the future. He told that the depth of the lake was more than 30 meters. But due to the silt accumulated in the lake, its depth is also decreasing. He told that at present the lake is deepest near the Pashan Devi Temple. Due to the presence of rocks inside the lake, it is difficult to measure the depth of the lake.
water also got contaminated
Ram Singh, local resident and chairman of the boat drivers committee, said that Nainijheel is a boon for the residents of Nainital. For boat drivers, this lake is their livelihood. He told that many buildings have been constructed in the mountains surrounding Naini Lake. At the same time, people also throw garbage from their homes in the drains which flows into the lake. And the water of the lake is polluted. At the same time, tourists coming to Nainital also throw garbage in Nainital lake. Due to which the ecosystem of Naini Lake also deteriorates. He told that at present the lake is the deepest near Pashan Devi Temple.
