Srinagar Garhwal: Barley cultivation is one of the important crops of Rabi season, whose increasing use in the market is proving beneficial for the farmers. Barley, used in grain, animal feed, industrial products such as wine, bakery, and fiber board, is cultivated especially in less fertile and alkaline soils. Also, farmers in hilly areas can cultivate barley from mid-November to the first week of December, which is considered the appropriate time for high production.
According to Dr. Ankit Rawat, agricultural expert of Haprek Institute of Garhwal University, barley is a main crop for the farmers of hilly areas and it is very important to sow it at the right time.
Field preparation for barley cultivation
Dr. Rawat suggests that light irrigation should be done in the field before sowing, so that sufficient moisture remains in the soil. After plowing the field, it is necessary to level it and use cow dung manure. The first plowing should be deep so that the weeds are completely destroyed. Sow seeds with light plowing 2 days after plowing.
seed sowing method
60-80 kg seeds are required per hectare, which is sown by sprinkling method. It is appropriate to do the first irrigation 30 days after sowing. The crop is ready for harvesting in about 120 days.
