New Delhi. Every day, incidents of bikes catching fire while filling petrol at petrol pumps are coming to light. While filling the oil, some mistakes are made by the bike drivers and some mistakes are made by the petrol pump employee due to which the bike catches fire. However, if bike drivers take some precautions, they can avoid fire accidents.
Actually, petrol is a very flammable substance which starts burning as soon as it comes in contact with any hot object or spark. Due to this you can get burnt while sitting on the bike. Therefore, it is important that fuel leakage is not allowed in the bike, and it is also important to keep some things in mind while filling petrol.
What is the correct way to fill petrol?
—People often do not pay attention while filling petrol, due to which many times the bike catches fire due to mistake. The most common mistake people make while filling petrol is using their smartphone. While taking petrol, clear instructions are given not to use smartphone or any such device which produces electromagnetic radiation. Do not talk on the phone at all while taking petrol. One should not use the phone at all with the bike tank lid open. Due to this, the fume coming out of the petrol tank catches fire.
—The second mistake is not paying attention to the nozzle. Petrol pump employees often make this mistake. After filling petrol, while removing the nozzle, some drops of petrol fall on the bike’s tank and engine. If the engine of the bike is hot then the same petrol drops will catch fire. Therefore, while taking petrol, take care that oil does not fall on the bike from the nozzle.
—The third mistake is that people keep the bike engine on while taking petrol, which is very dangerous. If you keep the engine on while taking petrol then the risk of fire increases manifold. The heat from the engine causes the petrol to catch fire. Therefore the engine should be kept switched off at the petrol pump.
Filling the bike’s tank completely also increases the risk of fire. Let us tell you that the fuel cap of the bike is not completely sealed, because the fuel gas also needs space to escape. When the tank is full, petrol spills out. Therefore the tank should never be filled.
What to do to escape if a fire occurs
Fire caused by petrol spreads very fast. Water should not be used at all to extinguish it. It is safe to extinguish petrol fire only with fire extinguisher. Petrol is lighter than water, so it floats on water and starts burning. In such a situation, it can be extinguished with carbon dioxide fire extinguisher or foam.
