Dehradun: Igas Bagwal, celebrated 11 days after Diwali in the hilly areas of Uttarakhand, has its own special significance and cultural heritage. It is also called ‘Budhi Diwali’, and this time it will be celebrated on 12 November 2024. The objective of this festival is not only to honor the old traditions but also to keep the cultural heritage of Uttarakhand alive.
Cultural significance of Igas Bagwal
Igas Bagwal is not just a festival but a symbol of the folk culture of Uttarakhand. The ancient belief behind celebrating this festival 11 days after Diwali is that the news of Lord Shri Ram’s return to Ayodhya reached Garhwal late, and the people of Garhwal celebrated their Diwali later in this happiness. Apart from this, when the Garhwali soldiers returned to their villages after 11 days after the victory in the Tibetan War under the leadership of brave warrior Madho Singh Bhandari, a celebration was held by lighting lamps, which became the form of Igas.
Special tradition of Igas
Buffalo game is the main attraction of this festival. In this game, torch-like buffaloes made of pine wood are lit and folk songs and dances are enjoyed while rotating them. People sing traditional songs like “Bhailo Re Bhailo,” “Kakhdi Ko Railu,” and “Ujyaalu Aalo Andhero Bhagalu” and dance ‘Chanchhadi’ and ‘Jhumelo’. It is also an environment-friendly festival, as there is minimal use of firecrackers in it.
Historical context of the festival
According to senior journalist Ajay Rana, the historical connection of this festival is also linked to the brave warrior Madho Singh Bhandari. He won the battle at Dapaghat in Tibet about 400 years ago, and on returning home this festival was celebrated by lighting lamps.
Modern Relevance of Igas Bagwal
Today Igas Bagwal not only cherishes the culture and traditions of Uttarakhand but also gives an opportunity to the young generation to connect with their roots and understand the importance of community unity. Every year this festival comes alive with the lighting of buffaloes in the mountains and the echo of folk songs.
