NEW DELHI: Posters put up by Samajwadi Party leaders lauding party chief Akhilesh Yadav whilst criticising the Bharatiya Janata Party were seen in Amethi ahead of assembly by-polls in Uttar Pradesh.
The posters featured various slogans, including “There is fear of Akhilesh ji, BJP’s end is near.” (There is fear of Akhilesh ji and the end of the BJP is near) and “The more you choose, the more you will lose.” (The more you delay the elections, the worse your defeat will be).
The Election Commission has rescheduled by-elections in Uttar Pradesh, Kerala and Punjab from November 13 to November 20. Recently, Akhilesh Yadav claimed that the BJP delayed the election to prevent voters affected by “mega-unemployment” in Uttar Pradesh, who had returned home during festivals from their work locations elsewhere, from exercising their voting rights.
In a post on X, Yadav said, “First the Milkipur by-election was postponed, now the dates for by-elections for the remaining seats have been announced. The BJP was never so weak. The fact is that due to ‘Maha-Berozgari’ in UP, people move to different parts of the country for work.”
Recent political discourse in the country has witnessed numerous poster and slogan exchanges. In August, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath gave the slogan of ‘Batenge toh tenghe‘ while holding a rally in Agra. In October this year, posters with the same slogans were also seen in Maharashtra, where assembly elections are scheduled for November 20.
In response, SP put up the posters reading, “Mathadheesh kaatenge aur baatenge, PDA degi aur jeetegi (Head of the Mathh will divide and cut, PDA will unite and win)”.
A total of nine assembly seats will go to by-elections in UP including Meerapur, Kundarki, Ghaziabad, Khair, Karhal, Sishamau, Phulpur, Katehari and Majhawan.
