Bageshwar. Uttarakhand state is a confluence of many traditions. Many unique traditions can be seen in many hilly areas including Bageshwar. Even today, mythological traditions are followed before auspicious work. One of these special traditions is to make big urad dal before auspicious functions. While talking to Local 18, environment lover Kishan Malda, resident of Bageshwar, said that in the mountain houses, before any auspicious work or on the festival day, urad balls are made. He said that before any auspicious work in the mountain, large and whole pieces of urad are offered to the Lord. Auspicious works are started only after it is offered. Urad dal is prepared and offered to God before big weddings, naming ceremonies, Shraddha, deity puja, Jagar, Ghanai, group puja in the village, birthdays and Bhandara. There is a belief in the mountains that by doing this, God becomes happy and helps in making the auspicious work successful, hence the offering of urad gram in the mountains has special significance.
Kishan Malda explains that urad is a special part of the mythological tradition of Bada Pahad. This is a kind of mythological dish, which we saw our elders making before auspicious functions. Today, before any auspicious work, we make these and offer them to God and pray for the success of our home and village.
How to make urad dal badas?
To make urad dal big, the dal is washed thoroughly and soaked in water for two to three hours. After the pulses are soaked, their water is taken out and it is ground in a mortar and pestle. Green chilli, black pepper, cumin, salt, turmeric are added to this paste and mixed well. Small balls are made from this paste and these are fried in oil and in this way the balls are prepared. After offering Puri to God along with the elder, it is also fed to the people. Its taste is very wonderful. Especially the people of the mountains like the taste of this dish which has been being prepared since ancient times. The mountain people eat Puri and Vada with great enthusiasm.
Custom of distribution among married daughter-relatives after Bhog
There is also a special custom of sending Bada and Puri of urad dal to married daughters and relatives. After the Bhog, the leftovers are distributed among the elder and Puri relatives and married daughters. If possible, they are delivered to their homes. This special custom is still followed well in the mountains even today.
