Bageshwar. Uttarakhand is the first state in the country to grant license to grow hemp for research and industry. In 1985, hemp fruits and flowers were banned under the anti-narcotics law. There is no restriction of any kind on dried hemp stalks and seeds. In many hilly areas like Bageshwar of Uttarakhand, strong ropes are prepared by extracting the fibers from dried hemp stalks. While talking to Local 18, expert and environment lover Kishan Malda says that if the youth of the hills cultivate non-intoxicating cannabis, then they can earn good income from the goods produced from it.
According to environmentalist Kishan Malda, the ropes prepared from dried hemp stalks are so strong that they are used for many types of needs. Making rope from hemp fibers is considered a type of craft, which has been practiced in the mountains since ancient times. Fibers are taken out from the dried stalks of hemp and soaked in hot water so that they become soft. After this, the fibers are prepared by beating them with wood and drying them in the sun. After drying, these fibers are twisted by hand and molded into the form of rope. This process requires physical labor but the finished rope is quite strong.
Big opportunity for self employment
This work of making rope from hemp stalks can become a big self-employment opportunity for the youth of hilly areas. This industry can be promoted with the cooperation of government and local institutions. It is hoped that if the youth are given proper training and marketing support in making rope from hemp fibers, then it can become an important means of regional employment.
Benefits to the environment and economy
This rope made from hemp is environment friendly and is also an example of traditional art. If it is promoted commercially, the state’s economy can also benefit greatly from it. In ancient times, many ropes were made from the fibers of hemp stalks and these ropes were durable for years. The mountain people used this rope for tying domestic animals, plow rope, fetching wood and hay. Even today this rope is made and used in the mountains.
