Dehradun: A new facility has been started for the parents of newborn babies in Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand. A Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) has been inaugurated at Gandhi Shatabdi Hospital, with an aim to reduce the need for private hospitals to treat small babies. This unit has a specialist pediatrician and modern facilities with 6 beds, so that babies can get specialized care. The need for SNCU was being felt in the district hospital for a long time and now its work has been completed.
Health Minister Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat said at the inauguration of SNCU that the residents of Doon will get great relief from this unit. He said that the state government is continuously taking steps towards improving health services. Haridwar Medical College has also been started this year, and there are plans to start Rudrapur Medical College by next year. Along with this, a target has also been set to appoint 1500 nurses and 288 doctors. He assured that the shortage of specialist doctors in the state will be bridged by 2027.
Dehradun District Magistrate Savin Bansal also played an important role in the early start of SNCU. He told that from his experience he realized that lack of neonatal care facilities and blood banks is a big problem. After the DM’s inspection, the work of SNCU was completed rapidly, and now very soon a blood bank will be established in Coronation Hospital also. Gandhi Shatabdi Hospital was developed as a child and maternity care center during the Covid pandemic, but a decline in delivery cases was seen due to the absence of Nikku ward.
