Excerpts from the interview:
It is incredibly encouraging to hear about your path from being a first-generation Vietnamese American to being a well-known makeup artist. What first piqued your interest in beauty, and how did that influence your professional path?
Thank you! Growing up as a first-generation Vietnamese American, I didn’t always see people who looked like me in the mainstream beauty world, which made it hard to see where I could fit in. But I was always fascinated by the transformative power of makeup and how it could make people feel confident and express themselves. My interest truly sparked when I saw how makeup could change a person’s energy and even their presence, which felt inspiring to me. That realization became a big part of my journey—discovering that beauty was about much more than appearance; it was about empowerment. I knew I wanted to create that kind of experience for others, and that vision has guided me throughout my career.
At its inception, Patrick Ta Beauty aimed to empower people to feel confident in their own skin. What motivated you to establish your brand, and how do you make sure that your customers are drawn to your offerings?
Creating Patrick Ta Beauty was all about filling a gap I felt existed in the industry—products that not only delivered on quality but also spoke to the diversity of beauty and the power of confidence. Every product has to feel luxurious yet approachable. Feedback from clients, fans, and the community is also incredibly valuable. They inspire the direction of each new launch, ensuring the brand continues to feel fresh and authentic.
Your creative methods have established trends in everything from daring red carpet looks to social media sensations. Could you share any beauty secrets or tenets that you adhere to?
One of my main beliefs is that skin should look like skin. My approach always starts with enhancing the natural beauty of someone’s features rather than masking them. A great example is my love for cream-based products, which I think blend seamlessly to create a more natural, skin-like finish. Another secret is layering textures, like using cream blush topped with powder blush—this gives dimension and a long-lasting effect. I also believe that less is often more; focusing on one feature, like a bold lip or a soft, smoky eye, makes a bigger impact than trying to highlight everything at once.
Nykaaland is a very popular event for those who love beauty. What were you most looking forward to teaching during the masterclass at the event, and what could participants gain from you?
Nykaaland is such an exciting opportunity! I was really looking forward to connecting with beauty enthusiasts and sharing techniques that can elevate anyone’s makeup game, no matter their skill level. My goal was for participants to walk away with techniques they can use every day—things like perfecting a glowing complexion or mastering contour and highlighting for their face shape. I also wanted to share the “why” behind my techniques, so they understand how to adapt them to their own features. It’s all about empowering people to feel confident in their own unique beauty.
The beauty business is a dynamic one. How can you make sure your work feels new and transformational while staying ahead of trends?
The beauty industry moves fast, and staying ahead requires constantly looking for inspiration, whether from fashion, art, or even nature. I also make it a point to stay engaged with my audience—they are always on the pulse of what’s new and exciting. Another essential part of staying innovative is being open to experimenting with new textures, colours, and techniques in my work. By blending classic techniques with new ideas, I try to create looks that feel timeless yet modern. It’s all about respecting the fundamentals of beauty while pushing boundaries and adapting to what people are excited about next.
