Bollywood stars, like Sonam Kapoor and Ananya Panday, are reinventing fashion by rummaging through their mothers’ closets to find classic ensembles that are rich in design and emotion.
Remember the time we used to raid our mother’s wardrobe to try her ethnic outfits and jewellery. Growing up, many of us like to pull off our mom’s wedding dress at family functions instead of buying a new dress. This trend of borrowing your mom’s clothes labelled as ‘Mom Couture’ is gaining significant momentum in Bollywood. While the divas have no dearth of resources, many of them are embracing these old treasures.
Every outfit tells a story and reflects our personality. Here, rocking our mother’s clothes creates a sense of personal history and reminds us of good memories and stories. It is also a sustainable choice as it promotes reusing.
On this note, let us explore a few instances when Bollywood celebrities embraced the ‘Mom Couture’ trend and rocked their mother’s outfits like a pro-
Ananya Blacksmith
Ananya Panday recently wore her mother Bhavana Panday’s 21-year-old custom-made aqua-blue suit for her cousin, Deeya Shroff’s wedding festivities. The exquisite ensemble featured studded embellishments and motifs and was designed by late fashion designer Rohit Bal.
Sharing her pictures from the celebration, Ananya wrote, “Wearing my mom’s from 21 years ago, Gudda forever.”
Sonam Kapoor
Sonam Kapoor attended a wedding of close friends dressed in a 35-year-old Gharchola saree, earlier this year. The actress looked gorgeous in the elegant ensemble and proved that one can never go wrong when borrowing from their mother’s closet. Sonam’s saree featured intricate weave patterns, a bandhani design, broad patti borders, and mirror embellishments at the ends.
Sharing her stunning pictures on the photo-sharing app, Sonam wrote, “Thanks mama for lending me this sari and blouse, love raiding your closet.”
Sanya Malhotra
Sanya Malhotra attended the Melbourn Film Festival in a handmade vibrant block brocade kurta set designed by her mother, Renu Malhotra. While not ‘something borrowed’, the Dangal actress paid homage to her roots by wearing this design. Her lovely ensemble featured a relaxed fit, three-fourth sleeves, and a plunging neckline.
Sanya revealed that her mother wanted to pursue designing but couldn’t because of financial constraints. Throughout her childhood, her mother would design outfits for her and her sister. Sharing her picture, she wrote, “From a young age, my mother was my personal stylist, designing and stitching clothes for my sister and me. She devoted herself not only to raising us but also to keeping us fashionably updated.”
Prateik Babbar
The Mom couture trend is not limited to only actresses. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na fame actor Prateik Babbar attended a screening at the prestigious 77th Cannes Film Festival dressed in a suit-pant combo made from his late mother Smita Patil’s Kanjeevaram sarees.
Designed by Rahul Vijay, the outfit paid homage to his roots. Sharing insights into the outfit’s creation, Rahul mentioned that they used two sarees and crafted the ensemble in 48 hours after a lot of back and forth with designers.
