Srinagar Garhwal: Coriander is used as a spice and is in demand in the market throughout the year. The time till the third week of November is considered suitable for sowing coriander in hilly areas. Farmers of hilly areas have to select such varieties of coriander which give good yields in the hilly areas. Regarding the varieties of coriander which give good yield for hilly areas, Dr. Jaydev Chauhan, agriculture expert of Haprek of Garhwal University, told about the good variety of coriander.
Talking to Local 18, he said that Pant Haritama, developed by Pant Nagar University in the hilly region, is a variety which gives very good yields in the hilly region. This variety gives a yield of 15 to 20 quintals per hectare in hilly areas and grows well even in non-irrigated land.
Gives yield up to 15 quintals in hilly areas
Pant Coriander 21 variety prepared by Pant Nagar University also gives better yields in non-irrigated lands and hilly areas. This variety of coriander gives a yield of about 15 quintals per hectare in hilly areas. This variety does not require irrigation. It gives good yield in just one or two irrigations.
It is ready in four months
For hilly areas, Pali Local Collection variety of coriander also gives good yield to a great extent. However, this variety requires irrigation at an interval of 15 days and in hilly areas it gives a yield of 12 to 13 quintals per hectare. It is ready for harvesting in about 4 months.
Best for hilly and plain areas
Bareilly local variety of coriander gives good yields in plains and hilly areas. Farmers can sow this variety in both hilly and plain areas. This variety requires 3 to 4 irrigations. It is also used extensively for salad. It gives a yield of between 15 to 20 quintals per hectare.
Suitable for both irrigated and non-irrigated areas
The local coriander variety of Hanuman Garh, Rajasthan is also considered better for hilly and plain areas. It is considered best for both irrigated and non-irrigated land. This variety of coriander gives a yield of 12 to 15 quintals per hectare and is ready for harvesting in about 3 months.
