Dehradun : The ONGC Chowk road accident in Dehradun has shaken everyone. Many videos related to this were going viral on social media and different types of reactions of people have come to light. There were speculations about whether the accident happened due to over speed. However, the smart city management and police examined the videos of that night in the Integrated Command and Control Centre. In which Innova car was seen roaming in many parts of the city. It is noteworthy that in most of the road accidents, either rash driving or over speed are the main reasons. Let’s take a look at the figures of past years.
Increase in accidents year after year
Every year in Uttarakhand, about 85 percent of road accidents occur due to over speeding or rash driving. If we look at the data of the last three years till September, there were 1219, 1220 and 1311 road accidents in the years 2022, 2023 and 2024 respectively. Out of which 929, 922 and 1114 accidents occurred due to over speeding. It is noteworthy that the accidents due to over speed are increasing year after year. If you make a comparative study of the data of 9 months of the last three years, you will be surprised to know that about 1712 people died in these accidents, while more than 3000 people were injured. According to the data for the last three years till September, there were more than 3600 accidents.

20 main causes of accidents
It is noteworthy that the police classify road accidents based on a total of 20 reasons. Such as consumption of alcohol or drugs, rash driving, over speeding, underage driver, talking on mobile phone while driving, overloading, driving on the wrong side are the major classifications. In all these classifications, most of the accidents occur due to over speed.
Challans issued for 3000 people
Local18 spoke to Dehradun SP City Pramod Kumar about accidents occurring due to over speed. He said that it is true that over speeding or careless driving are the main reasons for most of the road accidents. In such a situation, the police administration continuously takes the strictest action against such drivers. At night, action is being taken by installing barricades in the city area and rural areas also. In the last few months, we have issued challans to more than 3000 people for over speeding and rash driving. Apart from this, strict action has also been taken against those who drink and drive, challan is being issued to such drivers through interceptors. Challans have been issued to many people through speed gun and radar gun.
