New Delhi. Apple has recently launched the iPhone 16 series, but there is uncertainty regarding the sale of this phone in Indonesia. Although the Indonesian government has not officially announced any ban on the iPhone 16, but according to leading Indonesian websites like Kompas.com, it may be banned.
According to Indonesian Industry Minister Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Apple may not be allowed to sell the iPhone 16 due to lack of certification. He said that Apple has not met the required investment requirements, due to which this certification is incomplete.
iPhone 16 missing from Apple’s website too
The iPhone 16 is not available on major Indonesian e-commerce platforms like Tokopedia, Blibli, and Lazada, however, the phone’s accessories are listed on these platforms. Even the iPhone 16 is not being sold on Apple’s Indonesian website, indicating a possible ban.
Lack of investment became a hindrance
Apple had committed to invest 1.71 trillion rupiah in Indonesia, but has so far invested only 1.48 trillion rupiah, leaving a shortfall of 230 billion rupiah. The shortage is impacting TKDN (Local Component Level) certification, which mandates the use of 40 percent local content for foreign devices sold in Indonesia.
“We, the Industry Ministry, cannot issue permission for the iPhone 16 yet, as Apple has yet to fulfill some investment commitments,” Minister Kartasasmita said in a statement to Kompas.
CEO Tim Cook’s visit to Jakarta
Recently Apple CEO Tim Cook visited Jakarta and met Indonesian President Joko Widodo. Both discussed possible manufacturing opportunities. However, unless Apple fulfills its commitment to further invest in Indonesian facilities, including the establishment of local Apple Academies, the future of the iPhone 16 in the Indonesian market remains in limbo.
