‘We were successful in this challenging surgery’
This is the first time that a cochlear implant has been done to a girl of such a young age in the state. On this, Dr. Trupti Mamgai, chairperson of the ENT department of the hospital, told Local 18 that there is no doubt that this surgery was a challenge for us too. The biggest reason for this was the age of the girl, who was only 7 months old. However, we were successful in our surgery. Now Devashree will be able to hear the words. It is noteworthy that till now 121 patients have been given cochlear implants free of cost in the hospital. Under the ADIP scheme, children up to 5 years of age are provided free surgery facility in the hospital.
What is a cochlear implant?
Cochlear implant is an advanced medical technology, which proves to be a boon for people with severe hearing loss (sensory neural hearing loss). It is an electronic device that is implanted inside the ear through surgery. It is useful for those people who do not get any benefit from hearing aids. Cochlear implant is a better option. However, in private treatment its cost ranges from Rs 7 to 7.5 lakh.
Seven-month-old Devashree’s surgery proves that with parental awareness and proper treatment, life can be given a new direction. This is not just a story of surgery but of hope for a family.
