New Delhi. The country’s largest social media platform WhatsApp has banned about 84 lakh accounts in the country. WhatsApp’s parent company Meta has taken this action in just a month. The company says that its platform was being used for scams, hence the company has banned these suspicious accounts. Many users had informed WhatsApp about such scams and complained about it on its platform.
In the transparency report released by the company, it was told that for the safety of the users, Meta has banned about 8,458,000 WhatsApp accounts. This action has been taken to comply with Section 4(1)(d) and 3A(7) of the Information Technology Act. After receiving continuous complaints, WhatsApp had increased monitoring and the accounts which were found suspicious have been banned by the company.

One month action taken
The company’s report shows that Meta has banned all these accounts between August 1 and 31. Out of these, 16.61 lakh accounts were immediately closed, while the remaining were banned after investigation after being found suspicious. The company closed more than 16 lakh accounts without any complaint from the users, because their misuse was revealed during monitoring.
The company received more than 10 thousand complaints
It has been told in the report that the company has received 10,707 complaints from users in August 2024. Of these, the company took strict action against 93. Apart from this, complaints received through email and other mediums were also thoroughly investigated. The company says that most of these accounts were complaints related to scam and exploitation.
Account gets banned due to these reasons
- If a user sends excessive bulk messages or uses it for spam or any fraud or sharing wrong information or spreading rumors, then his account is banned.
- Even if a user violates Indian law and uses WhatsApp for suspicious activities, his account will be banned.
- If any person complains against any user on WhatsApp or tries to exploit him, after investigation, the account of such user will be banned.
