Srinagar Garhwal. Onion is a vegetable which remains in demand in the market throughout the year. Recently, onion prices have increased rapidly, and currently the price of onion in the market is ranging from Rs 60 to Rs 80. From this perspective, onion is one of the major crops of Rabi season. The month of November is going on, and this time is considered best for planting onions in the fields. By this time farmers prepare onion nurseries. Farmers have to take maximum care at the time of nursery preparation, because at this time the risk of diseases is highest. A disease is mostly seen in onion nurseries. Which is called dumping off or galka disease. This disease mostly occurs when the onion seedlings become 2 to 3 inches tall, often due to this disease the onion nursery dies in 2 to 3 days and starts drying up.
Local 18 talked to Purushottam Badoni, Additional Training Officer of the Horticulture Department, regarding saving onion nurseries from dumping off i.e. Galka disease. He said that after the onion nursery is ready, farmers have to take utmost care. Because at this time a disease would destroy the dumping off onion nursery. Every day, most of the farmers remain worried about the fact that their onion nurseries are drying up.
How to avoid dumping off
According to agricultural experts, to protect onion nurseries from this dangerous disease, medicine should be sprayed, which not only eliminates damping off and also prevents it from drying up. If this disease occurs in the farmers’ beds, then they have to spray Carbendazim and Dithane M 45 in the nursery. For this, first of all Carbendazim and Dithane M 45 have to be dissolved at the rate of 1 gram per liter. Then after that it has to be sprayed deeply in the nursery so that it reaches directly to the roots of the plants. The incidence of dumping off starts reducing within 2 to 3 days of its spraying. And after the onion nursery becomes healthy, the farmers can plant it in the field.
