Bageshwar: Many villages of Uttarakhand are affected by the disaster and the people there are continuously demanding to shift to a new place. One such village is Kunwari of Bageshwar, which is facing the brunt of disaster for the last six years. The people here were continuously demanding displacement. There is good news for the people who have been struggling for so many years. The Uttarakhand government has given permission to the administration to displace 54 affected families of the village. While talking exclusively to Local 18, Kapkot’s SDM Anurag Arya says that after conducting geological survey of the area, the people there are being shifted to another part of the village.
When did the landslide start in the village?
According to media reports, landslides started happening in the village since 2013, but in the year 2018, the village was completely hit by disaster. As time passed, the craggy hills and marks of landslides became the identity of the village and the people of the village were forced to live in fear. Farming was also ruined due to cracks in the fields. Many houses were razed to the ground due to the disaster. Someone’s courtyard and the back portion of someone’s house had caved in and the houses were in danger. People were living under such conditions under compulsion.
Impact of disaster on population
When the village was first hit by a landslide in 2013, 76 families lived in the village. In the first phase, 18 families were displaced. Out of these, nine families were shifted to Vilup Tok village and two to Aithan village. Seven families expressed their desire to stay in the village. The remaining 58 families started living in the village under the shadow of danger. Three of these families shifted with their own resources, one family had only one woman, who died. By the year 2022, there will be 54 families left in the village.
delay in displacement
In the second phase, the remaining 54 families of the village were to be displaced, for this the administration had selected land in Neeli of Aithan of Kapkot Nagar Panchayat, but due to late delay, the village could not be displaced here and the selected place was also affected by disaster. The gift went up. In the year 2023, the villagers again raised the demand for displacement. Then in the third phase, the administration conducted a geological survey in Kunwari itself and selected a safe part and sent the report to the government and the government gave approval to the administration for the displacement of the village.
Now the village will soon be displaced
Kapkot SDM Anurag Arya said that the administration has received the displacement money. For this, an amount of Rs 2 crore 29 lakh 50 thousand has been received from the government. This information has been given to the villagers. The process of land selection and survey has been completed. Soon, land will be made available to every family and gradually the amount of building construction amount of Rs. 4.25 lakh per family will be sent to their accounts. So that villagers can build their houses in the newly selected area.
Villagers’ opinion on displacement
Dharma Devi, a resident of Kunwari, says that the people of the village were waiting for relocation to a safe place for so many years and now it has been approved. He and the people of the entire village are happy with this decision of the government. They hope that now they will be able to live a peaceful rural life in safe land like before. The problems they were facing due to lack of land will also be solved.
