Nainital. A workshop on women safety was organized in Nainital, Uttarakhand. After Haldwani, a sensitization workshop was held in Nainital under the leadership of Nainital District Magistrate Vandana Singh. Sensitization workshop was organized at GGIC School. In this, the unsafe places mentioned by the girls were marked by the Women and Child Development Department under the ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ campaign. In this workshop, officials from different departments of the district like health, education and probation asked the girl students about their problems.
Joint Magistrate Varuna Aggarwal asked the girls to tell about unsafe places without any fear. He assured the girl students of strict action against anti-social elements. After which the girls marked a total of 25 areas of Nainital where they felt scared. The reason for fear is the gathering of miscreants and drug addicts at these places. The places he mentioned are – Harinagar, near the mosque in Mallital, firing area of Alukhet, bus stand, Snow View, near the gate of GGIC school, Zoo Road, slaughter house, Musafirkhana, Durgapur, park on Mall Road, jail. Campus etc. Now police patrolling will be increased in these areas. Policemen will patrol while going to school-college and during holidays.

During the workshop, the girl students told the officials that passengers board the buses on Nainital to Haldwani route after drinking alcohol and incidents of molestation happen every day. Most of the drivers and conductors are also drunk. The same problem arises in taxis also. Women are molested, attempts are made to touch their hands while taking money. During the workshop, the girl students were also given information about their health and their rights.
Report being sent to the District Magistrate
Additional Director of Child Development Richa Singh said that the places which the girl students have described as unsafe have been marked with seriousness. Reports of the places which the girls have declared safe are being sent to the District Magistrate. During the workshop, the girls demanded continuous inspection of roadways bus stands, installation of CCTV, continuous police patrolling at identified places, installation of street lights in the streets etc. All these demands will be worked upon.
