Bhimtal. A heart-wrenching incident came to light on Monday evening from Gram Panchayat Siloti of Naukuchiatal area of Bhimtal, Uttarakhand. A woman from the village, who had gone to the forest to collect char, was made her meal by a leopard. The woman died a painful death in the attack by Guldar, while the other woman who had gone with the woman to the forest ran away and saved her life. After the incident, there is an atmosphere of panic in the entire area. According to the information, at 5 pm on Monday evening, 50-year-old Leela Devi, wife of late Narottam Arya, resident of village Siloti, had gone to the forest with another woman of her village to collect fodder for the cattle.
While both of them were moving forward in the forest, suddenly the leopard pounced on them. The leopard attacked Leela Devi and dragged her towards the forest. During this time, the other woman saved her life by running away and after reaching the village, told the villagers about this. After which the villagers immediately informed the forest department and police. The forest department team reached the spot and started searching for the woman. Leela Devi’s body was recovered about one kilometer from the village. Leopard claw marks were found near the dead body, which confirmed the incident.
Attacks have happened before too
After the incident, villagers said that there has been danger of wild animals in this area before also. Incidents of tiger and leopard attacks have happened here before but in recent times this type of incident has again worried the villagers. Many villagers are now afraid of going to the forest, especially women and children who often go to the forest to collect fodder for their animals. Forest Department Area Officer Vijay Melkani said that a thorough investigation of the incident is being done. The forest department is monitoring the movement of the leopard and appropriate steps are being taken to prevent such incidents in future. Also, the Forest Department is soon planning to run an awareness campaign in the area and discuss with the villagers regarding safety measures.
Villagers demanded security
After the incident, the villagers have appealed to the administration to catch this man-eating leopard as soon as possible. Also, keeping in mind the increasing activities of leopards and other wild animals in the area, strong security arrangements should be made. The villagers want that the forest department and administration should jointly install surveillance cameras in the forests and cages should be placed in the forests so that such incidents can be avoided in future. Block chief Dr. Harish Singh Bisht asked the forest department officials to immediately catch Guldar. Besides, a demand has also been made to give appropriate compensation to the victim’s family.
