Srinagar Garhwal. In Uttarakhand, the life of most of the people depends on animal husbandry. In comparison to the plain areas, there is a sharp drop in temperature in the mountainous areas during winter. During this period, animals also suffer from cold, fever, hypothermia and respiratory problems like humans. Due to these diseases, the milk production capacity of dairy animals also starts decreasing. In such a situation, cattle herders in hilly areas need to take special care of their animals. Local 18 had a special conversation with Dr. Uttam Kumar, a veterinarian at the Government Veterinary Hospital, about how to take care of pets like cows, buffaloes and other animals in winter.
Dr. Uttam Kumar told that the temperature falls in the hilly areas during winter. These days, the minimum temperature in the plains of Uttarakhand has been recorded at 8-9 degrees Celsius and the maximum has been recorded at 25-26 degrees Celsius. At the same time, in the hilly areas the minimum temperature has been recorded at 4-5 degrees and the maximum has been recorded at 15-16 degrees Celsius. The temperature may fall further in December. This will increase the risk of cold, fever and respiratory diseases in animals. Whereas sheep and goats suffer from respiratory diseases during winter.
Take care of pets like this in winter
- Animal enclosures and cowsheds have to be covered well to protect them from cold.
- Apart from this, animals should be fed only light water during winter.
- If you bathe an animal, it should be bathed with warm water only.
- The cow shed has to be cleaned every day and the floor has to be kept dry.
- To protect the animals from cold, special attention should be paid to the thickness of the bedding, sacks and gunny curtains on the windows etc.
Include all this in the diet of animals
In the cold season, the quantity of grains in the fodder should be increased and they have to be given enough food. Give such food to animals which contains nutrients like energy, protein, minerals, water, vitamins and fat etc. During this period, feed green fodder like Barseem to the animals. But keep in mind that feeding only green fodder causes indigestion to the animal, in such a situation feed dry fodder mixed with green fodder. Along with this, wheat porridge, khal, gram, guar binola, jhangore rice etc. should be given as grains in the diet of animals. By paying attention to all these things, animals will remain healthy even after the temperature drops in the mountainous areas.
