Dehradun. There has been no rain in most of the districts of Uttarakhand since the monsoon. In Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri and Pauri Garhwal districts, the figure is zero mm while other districts have seen very less rainfall. Till last year, there used to be rain and snowfall till the month of December, but this time it does not seem so. Till December 1, the Western Disturbance does not seem to be active in the state. The weather is likely to remain dry and there will be no rain for the coming week. In such a situation, there are means of irrigation in the plains but in the hilly areas, farmers depend on rain. Lack of water in mountainous areas can have a negative impact on crops. After sowing of wheat, gram, mustard and vegetables, it is necessary to get adequate amount of water, but dry weather is increasing the problems of the farmers.
Dehradun meteorologist Dr Anand Sharma told Local 18 that no strong western disturbance has arrived in Uttarakhand yet. In the coming days, Western Disturbance will affect parts of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh in India, but its impact will not be seen in Uttarakhand. In such a situation, the weather is expected to remain dry in the state for three to four days. Sowing of Rabi crops like wheat starts in the first week of November, but in hilly areas where there are no means of irrigation and farming depends on rain, then those farmers may have to wait longer because from mid-December. There may be light rain in the mountainous areas.
What do agriculture experts say?
Agriculture expert Vinod Joshi told Local 18 that work is done on Rabi crops like mustard, peas etc. in the months of October-November. Lack of rain has a bad effect on crops. Many biochemical processes take place in plants, in which water is an essential component. For example, water plays an important role in the process of photosynthesis in plants, through which plants make food and get energy, due to which the plant develops, but lack of water affects it. In such a situation, farmers should make maximum use of organic fertilizers like rotten cow dung, vermi compost and bio fertilizers etc. These fertilizers increase the water holding capacity of the plant. With this, water is irrigated and can be used for a long time also.
Mulching process beneficial for farmers
He said that the farmer can do the mulching process. Mulching means that after sowing, the upper surface of the soil is covered with grass, due to which the moisture remains intact and does not evaporate as vapor. In garlic, it is done in this way, due to which water is available to the plant for a long time and the accumulation is also good. Scientists have invented many varieties for irrigated areas. For this, you can contact your nearest Krishi Vigyan Kendra, where you will get these.
