Rishikesh : Seven water sources of Henwal river, a tributary of Ganga, have dried up due to water leakage at four places in the tunnel being built in the Rishikesh-Karnprayag railway project in Uttarakhand. These will be revived through the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA). A state government official said that in the tunnel being built from the water storage area of Hanwal river, water is leaking at a distance of 101 meters at four places from Neer Gaddu to Shivpuri.
He said that for the revival of four of the seven water sources that had dried up, State Forest Minister Subodh Uniyal has sanctioned Rs 3 crore from the CAMPA fund of the state government. A demand of Rs 1.5 crore has also been placed in CAMPA for the revival of the remaining three water sources.
On the other hand, Om Prakash Malgudi, Senior Project Manager of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, said that in the railway tunnel, water is leaking 44 meters in Neer Gaddu, 40 meters in Kyarki, 12 meters in Shivpuri and five meters in area.
He said that this water leakage will be stopped forever by treatment with chemicals and cement, so that the possibility of any kind of water loss can be eliminated. Malgudi said that the corporation is serious about bringing the ecosystem of this area back to its original state.
This matter is of Narendra Nagar assembly constituency. Forest Minister and local MLA Uniyal said that the Central Government is also encouraging the scheme to increase the water flow of the tributaries by rejuvenating them to strengthen the river system of the country as per the future requirement.
He said that under this, the water sources of Hanwal River, which has dried up due to the construction of the railway tunnel, will be restored through forestry techniques so that the old condition of water in Ganga can be restored.
