Fans are impressed by Ariana Grande’s performance as Glinda, the good witch in Wicked with many now speculating she could earn her first Oscar nomination.
Wicked, the first part of the hit musical adaptation of the same name, has recently hit theatres. The movie is already generating buzz for its cast and plot. Fans are particularly impressed by Ariana Grande’s performance as Glinda, the Good Witch. Many are now speculating she could earn her first Oscar nomination. Reports suggest Ariana is a strong contender for Best Supporting Actress at the 2025 Oscars but not in 2026 for part 2. On the other hand, her co-star Cynthia Erivo is expected to face tough competition from Angelina Jolie and Mikey Madison in the Best Actress category.
As per Page Six reports, the makers – Universal Pictures – have already submitted nominations to the Academy after consulting with Ariana and Cynthia’s teams. The final decision will be made by the jury member of the Academy. An insider speaking about the same said, “They both put their hearts and souls into this project, and I am sure they will both have two shots at the Oscars. The Oscar voters loved Wicked, there were tears and standing ovations in previews. I would not be surprised if it pulled off a win.”
As per reports, the same nomination pattern will be followed next year after the release of Wicked Part 2. It means Ariana Grande could be included in the Best Supporting Actress category once again but it is still not confirmed. Sources suggest Cynthia Erivo’s chances of securing a nomination for Best Actress are not guaranteed.
Oscar nominations will be announced on January 17 and according to Gold Derby bookies, the Thank U, Next singer is currently a top contender for Best Supporting Actress, alongside Zoe Saldana for Emilia Perez. Danielle Deadwyler’s performance in The Piano Lesson is also considered a strong contender. Other names include Isabella Rossellini for Concave, Monica Barbara for A Complete Unknown, Saoirse Ronan for Blitz and Felicity Jones for The Brutalist.
Last month, Universal had to clarify rumours about pay differences between Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo for their roles in Wicked. It was claimed that Grande was paid $15 million (Rs 127 crore), while Erivo received just $1 million (Rs 84 crore). A spokesperson denied these reports and claimed that they were false. The spokesperson confirmed that both actresses were paid equally for their roles as Glinda and Elphaba.
