Inter Globe Aviation, the company that operates Indigo, has filed a case against car manufacturing company Mahindra Electric Automobile Limited. Indigo has alleged trademark infringement over the use of ‘6E’ in the company’s recently launched electric car ‘Mahindra BE 6E’.
The matter was presented before Justice Amit Bansal in the Delhi High Court today i.e. Tuesday (3 December 2024), but he recused himself from it. The case may be heard on December 9.
Mahindra said- there is no scope for dispute
Mahindra Electric said in an official statement, ‘We do not see any dispute in our branding, as the company mark is ‘BE 6e’ and not ‘6E’ alone. This is different from IndiGo’s ‘6E’, which represents an airline.
There is no scope for confusion in this. Apart from this, the different styling of both shows their difference. Mahindra is in discussions with IndiGo to find an amicable solution.
IndiGo operates with ‘6E’ call sign
IndiGo operates with the ‘6E’ call sign, which is the basis of its branding and passenger services. Under this, the airline provides products like 6E Prime (seat selection, priority check-in and snacks), 6E Flex (flexible rescheduling and cancellation) and additional 6E-branded services.
This includes extra baggage option and lounge access. The airline had registered ‘6E Link’ in several trademark categories in 2015. In this, he can use 6E in services provided under Class-9, Class-16, Class-35 and Class-39.
Mahindra wants to trademark ‘BE 6E’
On November 25, Mahindra Electric has filed an application with the Registrar of Trademarks to register the mark ‘BE 6E’ under Class 12. Once registered in Class-12, Mahindra will get the right to use ‘6E’ designation for electric and combustion engine vehicles except two-wheelers.
Mahindra BE 6E, deliveries will start from February 2025
Mahindra & Mahindra launched two ‘born electric’ SUVs, XEV 9e and BE 6e, in the Indian market on 26 November. The company has manufactured both electric SUVs under the banner of its sub-brands XEV and BE.
They are designed on Mahindra’s in-house INGLO platform, which is a modular skateboard architecture specifically designed for electric vehicles.
Claimed range of over 500km and 0-100kmph speed in 6.7 seconds
Prices for the BE 6e Pack One start at Rs 18.90 lakh ex-showroom, while the XEV 9e Pack One will cost you Rs 21.90 lakh ex-showroom. Both models are scheduled to hit the market in January 2025.
Delivery will start from February 2025. The company claims that both the cars will get a range of more than 500 kilometers on full charge and will be able to accelerate from 0-100kmph in just 6.7 seconds.
