Bageshwar. As beautiful as Uttarakhand looks, the life of the people here is equally difficult. There are some people in the mountains who consider the problems of the people here as their own problems and try to find solutions to those problems. Similarly, three retired soldiers of Bageshwar are doing excellent work for the mountains. Soldiers Narayan Singh Ununi, Jagdish Joshi and Balwant Singh, who were heroes of the battlefield, are now engaged in solving the problems of the mountains after retirement and their efforts are indeed proving successful.
55-year-old Narayan Singh Ununi, originally a resident of Runikhet, Bageshwar, retired 7 years ago as Honorary Captain in the Indian Army. Coming back to the village he saw that most of the youth were under the influence of drugs. In such a situation, he resolved to change and started training youth to join the army in a field in the village. His effort was successful. Today, more than 2000 youth are getting help from his one step, out of which more than 200 youth are serving the country. In the year 2022, Nagrik Manch Bageshwar honored him with the Citizen Award for his excellent work. Today the youth of Delhi, Kanpur and Meerut are also taking training from him.
Paragliding training program started
50-year-old retired soldier Jagdish Joshi, resident of Nadigaon, Bageshwar, had come to the village 10 years ago. He wanted to create new paths for the mountain youth, so he worked as a member of the Adventure Activity Team while in the army and acquired this skill. Seeing the exodus from the mountains, he started a paragliding training program in Bageshwar with his savings. His effort was successful. Gradually, 6 paragliding sites were selected in the district and today youth not only from Bageshwar but also from other states are taking training at these sites. Due to their efforts, till now hundreds of youth have taken training in paragliding. One of his disciples, Sneha, is now training others after taking training from him. Jagdish Joshi said, ‘When I see these youth flying in the mountains, I feel as if the mountains are coming alive again and they are showing a new path to the youth.’
Former soldier Balwant Singh opened a cow shed
55-year-old former soldier Balwant Singh, resident of Kanda, Bageshwar, has served in BSF. Five years ago today he returned to the mountains. In the rural environment, he saw that the number of stray animals had increased and the animals were damaging people’s crops. To try to save farming, he started a cowshed in Kanda itself. He prepared a cow shelter for 100 animals with his own Rs 7 lakh. At present about 100 animals are living in this cow shelter. His efforts are not only providing security to the local crops but also providing employment to 10 local people. Balwant Joshi said that for him service does not end after retirement. The smile of the farmers is their profit.
District Magistrate Ashish Bhatgani has also appreciated the efforts of these three ex-servicemen of Bageshwar. He said that all three ex-servicemen are doing excellent work in the development and promotion of the mountain. They have an important contribution in taking forward the youth and society of the hills, which cannot be appreciated enough.
