Get ready for an adrenaline-pumping revenge thriller as Lee Joo Young takes on the lead role in Wavve’s upcoming original series, Punishment (working title). The announcement has sparked excitement among fans, with the production promising an intense storyline centred around justice and technology. On December 6, news reports confirmed Lee Joo Young’s casting as the protagonist of this eight-episode series, set to begin filming in mid-December.
Shortly after, her agency TEAMHOPE validated the news, saying, “Lee Joo Young has officially been cast as the lead in Wavve’s original drama Punishment. Filming is set to commence this month,” reports Soompi.
The plot of Punishment revolves around the gripping journey of Ha So Min, an aspiring yet struggling actress whose life takes a tragic turn after her parents fall victim to a devastating phishing scam. Fueled by the desire for justice, she dives into the dangerous world of cybercrime, using cutting-edge deepfake technology to infiltrate a vast voice phishing syndicate. The series promises to shed light on contemporary social issues, with a focus on the alarming rise of voice phishing and deepfake crimes.
Lee Joo Young’s character, Ha So Min, is not your typical heroine. She’s reportedly an underdog driven by sheer determination, grappling with grief and rage as she devises her revenge. The drama explores not only her personal struggles but also the broader societal implications of phishing crimes, with realistic portrayals of abductions, loan fraud and messenger scams.
Fans can expect Punishment to premiere on Wavve in May next year and the anticipation is already building. Adding to the buzz is the creative team behind the series. The drama is produced by Tiger Studio, helmed by CEO Kim Young-seop, known for hits like The Bride of Black and Numbers: Watchers of the Forest of Buildings. The director, Hyung In-hyeok, made waves with the film Chabak and his collaboration with Kim Young-seop marks their reunion after the success of Netflix’s Chabak, reports Soompi.
Lee Joo Young’s acting resume is equally impressive. After debuting in the 2012 film Encounter, she gained widespread recognition through her roles in MBC’s Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo and the critically acclaimed 2019 film Megi, which earned her the Actor of the Year Award at the 23rd Busan International Film Festival. Her nuanced performances and versatility make her an exciting choice for this complex role.
