Almora. The exercise regarding civic and panchayat elections in Uttarakhand now seems to be intensifying. Although the state government has not yet announced the election dates, leaders of different parties have started campaigning for the elections. He is hopeful that the party will give him the ticket, hence the phase of poster-banners and mail meetings of leaders with the public is going on in the state. The parties have appointed election in-charges in the districts regarding the elections. There is no doubt that the civic elections in Almora, Uttarakhand will be interesting because Almora Municipality has been declared a corporation and elections will be held here for the first time after the formation of the corporation. Seeing this, there is a lot of enthusiasm among the public also.
Almora resident Surendra Singh Bisht told Local 18 that he is very happy with the formation of Municipal Corporation and if the work is done in the manner in which the arrangements should be made in the Corporation, then the public will be able to get much better facilities from it. There will be an increase in many facilities including cleanliness of the city, proper roads, street lights. Apart from this, there should be good parks at various places, which will not only make the city look beautiful but will also benefit the public. Just as facilities are available in Delhi and other states, these facilities are also expected after Almora becomes a Municipal Corporation.
Almora has been an intellectual city
Almora resident Vinod Vaishnav said that our city has been an intellectual city in itself. He believes that the government has formed a corporation without thinking about the low population, which is a matter of surprise for everyone. He said that if the intention of the government is good, then there should be a budget arrangement in the corporation and Almora has the biggest problem. The public should get rid of stray animals which are increasing day by day in the city. He also said that with the increase in population, encroachment is also increasing day by day. Apart from this, special attention is also needed on cleanliness.
Was established in 1864
It is noteworthy that Almora Municipality was established in 1864. The outgoing Chairman of the Municipality, Prakash Chandra Joshi, while talking to Local 18, said that the state government has made Almora Municipality a Municipal Corporation, which he welcomes, but the biggest problem is the budget. Due to lack of financial assistance, the Municipal Corporation or the Council is not able to carry out its work. The government says that the revenue should be increased but there are many problems. Becoming a corporation will be beneficial, but it also requires a budget. He said that even when he was the Municipal President, he had said the same thing because the bodies get the funds of the State Finance Commission. It has some main parameters, which include population and area. As far as Almora is concerned, there is neither population nor expected area. Because of this there has always been a financial crisis here. He had to face a lot of problems during his tenure.
Benefits of becoming a Municipal Corporation
Prakash Chandra Joshi further said that the biggest benefit that we will get from becoming a Municipal Corporation is that our city can also be included in the Central Government’s AMRUT scheme. With the inclusion of the city in Amrit Yojana, many problems will be solved. Many facilities will increase, such as roads, drains, electricity system, small to big work will be done under this scheme and with the formation of a Municipal Corporation, people will be able to get many facilities, he is confident.
