Nainital: The threat of borer insects (insects) is being seen on Sal trees in the forests of Haldwani and Ramnagar of Nainital district of Uttarakhand. The borer insect is destroying the Sal tree spread over an area of about 1 hectare and turning it into powder, due to which the concern of the forest department has increased. At the same time, the Forest Department has informed FRI (Forest Research Institute), Dehradun in this regard. Now soon the team of FRI scientists will come to Ramnagar and inspect. Sal borer insect especially targets Sal trees. The effect of this insect is being seen on these trees in Ramnagar Forest Division.
These forests are coming under attack
Borer insect attacks the tree trunks and weakens them. This insect makes the Sal tree hollow. Borer insects start appearing in trees after the end of monsoon and remain in the trees throughout their life. About 1500 insects eat a lush green tree. The only treatment for trees affected by this insect is cutting. This insect first attacked Sal trees in the Corbett Tiger Reserve in the 70s. This time the forests of Haldwani and Ramnagar are coming under its grip.

Nature lovers have also expressed concern over the hollowing of trees by the sal borer insect. Nature lover Sanjay Chhimwal, resident of Ramnagar, says that to protect against this insect, an insecticide chemical called Carbo Furan is sprayed. When the pest infestation becomes severe on a tree, then the infested tree is cut down to completely control the pest.

On this matter, Ramnagar Forest Division DFO Digant Nayak said that the biggest threat to the Sal tree is due to the borer insect. This insect gradually destroys the Sal tree and turns it into powder. The outbreak of borer insect was seen in the 60s and 70s, but once again the outbreak is being seen in this area. He said that FRI has been informed in this regard. After which scientists will come soon and start the treatment of infected trees.
