Dehradun: Uttarakhand is known for its natural beauty and religious heritage. A wonderful spiritual energy is felt everywhere here. Apart from Garhwal and Kumaon, Jaunsar-Bawar region is also famous for ancient temples. In this context, the temple of Maa Bhadrakali located at Katapatthar in Dehradun district is very special due to its historical and religious beliefs.
The history of the temple is related to the Mahabharata period.
The history of the temple is related to the Mahabharata period. Mahesh Swaroop Brahmachari, founder of Sadhak Sangh, says that according to beliefs, during the period of exile, the five Pandavas came here and worshiped Mother Bhadrakali. This area was a part of Viratnagar at that time and Bhadrakali was considered to be the family deity of King Virat. In the 11th century, King Anangpal of Delhi got this temple renovated. His rule extended to many parts of Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan.
Construction of ancient tunnel and Shivalingas in the temple
According to Mahesh Swarup Brahmachari, founder of Sadhak Sangh, there was a tunnel under the temple, which led to the famous Lakhamandal of Jaunsar Bawar. It is believed that Pandavas reached Lakhamandal through this tunnel, where they built lakhs of Shivlingas. From here the Pandavas left for Kedarnath. Although, today this tunnel is closed, but its historical importance cannot be forgotten. The place near which the water of the Uttarabhimukh river is located is basically considered Siddha.
Ancient pindis and idols of gods and goddesses in the sanctum sanctorum
Even today a 21 feet high ancient Pindi is installed in the sanctum sanctorum of the temple. Years ago, during excavations, idols of many gods and goddesses including Lord Ganesha, Hanuman, Naga, Shiva-Shakti were found here. According to Mahesh Swarup Brahmachari, Katapatthar used to be the first stop of the Chardham Yatra in ancient times. Even today, when devotees go to Yamunotri Dham, they do not forget to have darshan of Mother Bhadrakali. This temple is worshiped as the family deity of 118 villages.
Modern form of the temple, tradition still remains intact
At present, there is a glimpse of modernity in the temple, but the antiquity of Maa Bhadrakali is still intact in the sanctum sanctorum. For devotees, this place is not only a religious center but also a medium to connect with history and tradition.
