Srinagar Garhwal: While youth are migrating from the hilly areas of Uttarakhand in search of employment, retired Major Gorkhi Chandola, resident of Rawat village of Pauri district, is becoming a source of inspiration for the youth. Major Gorkhi Chandola served in the army for 12 years. After that, he renovated the old house in his village and converted it into a homestay. Presently he operates homestays named Pathal in Pauri and Dehradun. They have built the homestay in ancient Pahari style and here they introduce the tourists to Pahari food and Pahari lifestyle. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has also spent a day in his Pathal homestay and he also praised the Pathal homestay.
Major Gorkhi Chandola told Local 18 that there was no previous plan to build a homestay in the village. They wanted to populate their grandparents’ house and village.
Old house converted into homestay
The house where he lived in his childhood was beginning to fall apart. After that his wife and he took the responsibility of repairing the house and the village. He slowly started repairing his ancestral house. Using the same mud, stone and wood from the old house, he rebuilt the house in Pahari style and converted it into a homestay.
The homestay is built in hill style
Initially the number of tourists remained less here, but gradually the number of tourists started coming here. He started liking the village environment, staying in hill homestay and hill food. After that, through him, other people also started reaching here and the homestay started running.
Homestay rent Rs 1800
They charge Rs 1800 per person for staying in homestay. Which includes all three meals and other things. Food is also cooked on the stove for tourists. In which mountain dishes are served.
Pathal homestay is also in Dehradun
He told that the homestay concept is still in its initial phase in Uttarakhand, but it can become a source of livelihood for the people of the hilly areas. He is also employing 4 other people in his homestay. Apart from Pauri, he also operates Pathal Home Stay in Dehradun.
