The Maha Kumbh Mela, one of the most prominent religious events for Hindus, will be commemorated in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, from January 13 to February 26, 2025. This great Hindu celebration attracts millions of devotees to take a holy dip at the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati rivers. The event is one of the largest religious fairs in the world.
Kumbh Mela has its roots in Hindu mythology, specifically Samudra Manthan (the churning of the seas). According to popular belief, gods or devas and anti-gods or asuras churned the ocean to obtain amrita, a nectar of immortality.

It’s believed that during this tremendous conflux, certain drops of amrita fell on earth at four holy places: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Nashik and Ujjain.
The event also symbolises the victory of good over evil. Devotees take a ritual bath in the holy rivers at these locations, in a belief that it would cleanse them of their sins.
The Kumbh Mela celebrates togetherness, faith and rejuvenation and is regarded as one of the largest peaceful gatherings of humanity in the world.

Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 Dates
- January 13, 2025: Paush Purnima – Paush Purnima is an important day during the Kumbh Mela that marks the beginning of the festival and Kalpvasa, a period of spiritual practice.
- January 14, 2025: Makar Sankranti- The first Shahi Snaan, or royal bathing, of the Kumbh Mela takes place on the holy occasion of Makar Sankranti. Pilgrims and tourists bathe in the holy rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati at the Sangam confluence.
- January 29, 2025: Mauni Amavasya- On this day, devotees take the second shahi or royal bath at the rivers and take a vow of silence, known as Mauna Vrat, to realign their minds and bodies.
- February 3, 2025: Basant Panchmi- It is the day for the third Shahi Snaan. During the Kumbh Mela, pilgrims celebrate Basant Panchami by taking a sacred dip in the Sangam and seeking blessings.
- February 4, 2025: Achla Saptami- Achla Saptami, also known as Ratha Saptami, commemorates the birth of the Sun God and is marked by prayers for health and prosperity. Bathing on this day is thought to wash away sins and bring longevity and strength.
- February 12, 2025: Purnima Magicians- Maghi Purnima is a full moon day in the month of Magh. It is regarded as extremely auspicious to take a holy dip in the Ganges, as it marks the conclusion of the month-long Kalpavas. It is thought that bathing on this day brings spiritual blessings and salvation.
- February 26, 2025: Maha Shivratri- Maha Shivratri is dedicated to Lord Shiva. Devotees take the final holy dip on this day. It is believed that taking a dip on this day absolves devotees of their sins and leads them towards moksha (liberation).
During the Maha Kumbh Mela, devotees also perform prayers, rituals and hawan on the banks of these rivers.
