Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy once again reiterated the idea of working 70 hours a week. He said- The youth have to understand that we have to work hard and work towards making India number one.
He said, ‘We have to keep our aspirations high because 800 million Indians get free ration. This means that 800 million Indians are in poverty. If we are not in a position to work hard, then who will work hard?
Murthy said, ‘At Infosys, I had said that we will go to the best companies and compare ourselves with the best global companies. Once we compare ourselves with the best global companies, I can tell you that we Indians have a lot to do.
He said that he was once a Leftist, when Jawaharlal Nehru was the Prime Minister and the Indian Institute of Technology had become a reality. Murthy reached Kolkata on Sunday. He attended the inaugural program of the centenary celebrations of the Indian Chamber of Commerce.
He said-
The world respects India for its performance. Performance brings recognition, recognition brings respect, respect brings power. I wanted to tell the youth that we have a big responsibility to fulfill the dream of our founders. This is why we all have to work hard.
We all were admirers of Nehru and socialism
Speaking to RPSG Group Chairman Sanjeev Goenka, Murthy said- My father used to talk about the extraordinary progress taking place in the country at that time. We were admirers of Nehru and socialism.
He said that I got a chance to work in Paris in the early 70s, but I was confused. Western countries used to talk about how dirty and corrupt India is. There was poverty in my country and there were potholes on the roads.
Murthy said that everyone in the Western countries was quite prosperous. Trains ran on time. I thought this couldn’t be wrong. I met the leader of the French Communist Party and he answered all my questions, but I was not satisfied.
Entrepreneurs build the nation
Murthy said- I realized that a country can fight poverty only when it creates employment which leads to disposable income. Government has no role in entrepreneurship. I also realized that entrepreneurs build nations because they create employment. They create wealth for their investors and pay taxes.
He said that if a country adopts capitalism, it will create good roads, good trains and good infrastructure. In a poor country like India where capitalism had not taken root, I realized that if I had to come back and experiment in entrepreneurship.
Performance brings recognition and recognition brings respect.
Murthy said that man can think and express. When God has given us the ability to think and it entitles us to think about those less fortunate than us. It has to be decided that the rest of the world should respect India.
He said that someone here told me that Chinese employees are 3.5 times more productive than an Indian. It is very easy for us to write nonsense, remain miserable, dirty and poor and remain isolated from the world.
