Zakir Hussain has received Padma Shri in 1988, Padma Bhushan in 2002 and Padma Vibhushan in 2023.
The condition of world renowned tabla player and Padma Vibhushan Ustad Zakir Hussain is critical. He has the problem of high blood pressure. He is admitted in ICU in San Francisco hospital. The news of his demise had come out earlier on Sunday, which has been rejected by Zakir’s sister Khurshid Auliya.
He told PTI, ‘Brother’s condition is very serious, his breathing is very fast. We are asking his fans in India and around the world to pray for him.
Khurshid said- I want to request all the media not to pay attention to wrong information about Zakir’s demise. His condition is very serious, but he is with us, he is alive. I feel very bad after seeing the news of his demise on Facebook. This is very wrong.

Zakir Hussain was born on 9 March 1951 in Mumbai. He was awarded Padma Shri in 1988, Padma Bhushan in 2002 and Padma Vibhushan in 2023.
Ustad has also received 4 Grammy Awards, out of which he received three simultaneously. His father’s name was Ustad Allah Rakha Qureshi and mother’s name was Biwi Begum. Zakir’s father Allah Rakha was also a tabla player. Zakir Hussain had his early education from St. Michael’s School in Mahim, Mumbai. Whereas he did his graduation from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai.
Zakir Hussain performed his first concert in America at the age of just 11. In 1973 he launched his first album ‘Living in the Material World’.
Ustad Zakir Hussain used to start playing tunes with his fingers after seeing a flat place. Zakir Hussain had the talent of playing tunes since childhood. Seeing any flat place, he would start playing tunes with his fingers. Even the utensils were not left in the kitchen. He used to touch the pan, pot and plate, whatever he got.

At the age of 12, he got 5 rupees, which had the highest price. When Zakir Hussain was 12 years old, he went to a concert with his father. Music stalwarts like Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Bismillah Khan, Pandit Shanta Prasad and Pandit Kishan Maharaj had attended that concert.
Zakir Hussain went on stage with his father. After the performance was over, Zakir got Rs 5. Referring to this in an interview, he had said – I have earned a lot of money in my life, but those 5 rupees were the most valuable.

Zakir Hussain also worked in a 1998 film Saaz. His opposite in this film was Shabana Azmi. Zakir Hussain played the role of Shabana’s lover in this film.
Zakir Hussain was also offered the role of Salim’s younger brother in the film Mughal-e-Azam (1960), but his father did not approve of it at that time. He wanted his son to concentrate only on music.
