With the season in full swing, several regions of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand have begun experiencing snow. Tourists are flocking to popular destinations such as Lahaul-Spiti and Manali in Himachal Pradesh. However, the snowfall has brought challenges, with videos surfacing of vehicles slipping on icy roads.
Driving in snowy conditions can be challenging, as vehicles often skid, and braking becomes less effective. Incidents of cars skidding and colliding have been reported near the Atal Tunnel and many other high-altitude regions. If you are planning to travel in these high-altitude regions, here are some essential tips for driving safely:
- Use Snow Chains: When driving in snowy areas, always use snow chains on your tyres. Snow chains provide extra grip, preventing the tyres from skidding.
- Reduce Tyre Pressure: Lower the pressure in your car tyres when driving on snow or black ice. This increases the contact patch, improving traction. Overinflated tyres become harder and are more prone to slipping.
- Maintain Distance and Choose the Right Gear: Keep a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. Avoid using the first gear; driving in second gear is ideal for better control. Additionally, limit your driving to daylight hours, as visibility and conditions are better during sunshine.
- Control Speed and Avoid Sudden Braking: Do not increase your speed in snowy conditions. Use the brakes sparingly in slippery conditions, relying more on the steering to control the vehicle. Keep the vehicle speed below 30 kmph, and press the accelerator gently.
- Pack Essentials: If travelling to snowy areas, carry emergency supplies, including medicines, warm clothes, and food. This is particularly important if travelling with children or family.
Slippery Conditions Near The Atal Tunnel and Lahaul
The temperature around Manali has dropped below freezing, causing water on the roads to freeze into black ice. Driving in the mornings and evenings has become particularly dangerous.
Taxi drivers in Manali recommend travelling to higher altitudes only after sunrise and in vehicles equipped with four-wheel drive or snow chains.
Deputy Commissioner Kullu Torul S Ravish has also urged caution, advising tourists to travel only after the sun comes out. These precautions can help ensure a safer journey for all heading to enjoy the beauty of the snow-covered regions.
