Dehradun: Uttarakhand government is going to launch large-scale schemes to encourage fisheries in the state. Projects worth Rs 200 crore are being started under ‘Mukhyamantri Matsya Sampada Yojana’. Their objective is not only to promote fish production but also to provide self-employment opportunities to the people of the state. Under this scheme, preparations are being made to increase the production of trout fish in cold running water, especially in the hilly districts, and to transport these fish across the country through cold chain.
Fishing will increase sources of income
Due to the geographical conditions of Uttarakhand, the sources of income in the state are limited. In such a situation, emphasis is being laid on developing fisheries as a big business. Last year, about 9,000 metric tonnes of fish was produced in the state, out of which 940 metric tonnes was trout fish. This time the government aims to double this production.
Fisheries Minister Saurabh Bahuguna says that we are focusing on making fisheries a profitable business. Schemes worth Rs 200 crore will provide employment to local people and increase their income. The objective of the government is to provide economic benefits to every person of the state.
Increasing demand for trout fish
The demand for trout fish is increasing rapidly in big cities across the country. It is sold at high prices in metros like Mumbai, Bengaluru and Delhi. It is a fish found in cold and clean water and is considered extremely beneficial for health. Trout is a good source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamins B12 and D. In view of its increasing demand, the Uttarakhand government has planned to develop cold storage and chain system to increase trout production.
Self-employment will get a boost
The main objective of promoting this scheme is to create new self-employment opportunities in the state. The aim is to expand fish production to other parts of the country by developing cold chains in hilly areas. Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are the only states where trout fish is produced. Considering its quality and increasing demand, the government has decided to make it a major source of self-employment.
This initiative of the government will not only make the state a hub of fisheries, but will also raise the income and standard of living of the local people. The natural beauty of Uttarakhand and the now developing fishing industry is all set to take the state to new heights.
