Dehradun: Many efforts are being made continuously to promote hill products. There is good production of juicy malt in Uttarakhand but farmers are not able to get the right price for it. Dhad, an organization working on the culture of Uttarakhand, is making efforts in this direction. The organization has started the ‘Month of Malte’ from 10th December which will continue till 12th January. In this, farmers growing Malta, seasonal and orange in Uttarakhand will be included.
Farmers should get the right price
Secretary of Dhad organization Tanmay Mamgai informed that in this campaign which will last for a month, discussions will be held with people in many districts to make them aware about the importance of malte and its true market value. He said that three decades ago the government had encouraged farmers to grow Malta. Farmers had started growing them with great enthusiasm, but now that their production is getting good, there is a problem of its marketing.
Due to this, farmers are not able to get their right price. Therefore, under this campaign, we will bring Malta from the hills to the farmers through Malta Mobile Van and deliver it to the people so that people can get a taste of it and the farmers can get the right price. Both will benefit from this.
Emphasis will be on Malta Mission
He told that Garhwal and Kumaon Mandal Development Corporation will be given special revolving fund for selling malta, processing of malta fruit, setting up cold storage at Mataila in Almora district and giving support price of Rs 7 to 10 per kg to the farmers for taking it to the collection centre. Has happened from time to time.
At the same time, despite efforts to make wine from Malta in Goa, working on giving GI tag to Malta etc., the faces of Malta producers look disappointed due to not getting the right price. He said that nowadays emphasis is being given on Kiwi and Apple missions, similarly work should be done on Malta mission also.
Farmers disappointed over not getting the right price and market for malt
It was believed that Malta production would strengthen the economy, but today when about 90 thousand metric tons are being produced every year in Uttarakhand, then its contribution to the economic system of the mountain is negligible. Farmers not getting market and right price is a matter of concern. Not getting the right price and market for malt raises question marks on the role of the constituted marketing board.
He told that in this month-long campaign, there will be many activities on the issue of Himalayan fruit production and market, wherever there will be dialogue with the farmers in the malt producing places. Malta Kachamoli will also be organized in the localities. On January 12, 2025, at 6 pm, a food festival will be organized in the Culture Department Auditorium, Haridwar Road, Dehradun, in which Malte related products can be enjoyed.
