Bageshwar. Ringal (Dingal Handicrafts) grows in large quantities in many hilly areas of Uttarakhand including Bageshwar. Ringal has special significance in the mountain since mythological times. Once upon a time, pens were made from ringal and today many types of decorative items are made from ringal. When its pens were made, the ink used to write on the text was made from the sand of Khadiya. Ringal is also called ‘small bamboo’. It occurs more in the high altitude areas of the Himalayas. Due to its strong roots, it is also effective in preventing landslides.
While talking to Local 18, environmental expert Kishan Malda, resident of Bageshwar, says that Ringal is even ahead of bamboo in strength. Ringal has been used as an important vegetable since ancient times. Ringal not only enhances the natural beauty of the mountains but is also an integral part of the livelihood and tradition of the hills. In ancient times, pens were made from ringal. At that time people used to make ink from Khadiya’s Kameth and write on Pathi or Bhojpatra with Ringal pen. It was not only a means of creation but also the main means of spreading knowledge. Today this tradition may have ended but it holds a special place in the culture and history of the mountain.
Modern use and decorative items
The use of ringal has changed over time. Now many types of decorative items are made from it. These include baskets, mats, swings, chairs, tables and many types of wall decoration items. Today, the demand for these handicrafts is not only in the local markets but their popularity is also increasing in urban areas. Ringal is not only economically and culturally important but it is also useful in environmental protection. Its roots are so strong that it proves helpful in preventing landslides. In hilly areas, Ringal reduces soil erosion and is helpful in maintaining environmental balance.
Species of Ringal
Kishan Malda tells that many species of Ringal like Golu, Garh, Garila, Dev, Tham, Sararu and Bhatputra are found. These species are used in making different types of products. However, in the modern era the traditional usefulness of Ringal has diminished. Ringal also needs protection. If Ringal’s products become available in the market on a large scale with the efforts of the government and local people, it can strengthen the regional economy. Ringal is still an invaluable resource of the mountains. It is not only a reminder of the past but can also become a powerful medium for sustainable development in the future.
