Digital Detox : Nowadays, smartphones have become such a big part of our lives that most of the time from waking up to sleeping is spent on it. Be it social media, video games, or online shopping, smartphone addiction is not only taking away our personal time but is also having a negative impact on our relationships and mental health. Amidst all this, digital detox is emerging as an effective solution, which can get rid of this terrible addiction.
Recently, a study conducted by Vivo revealed that on an average, parents use smartphones for 5 and a half hours and children use smartphones for 4 and a half hours daily. In this study it was also found that 64 percent children consider themselves addicted to smartphones. 73 percent of parents and 69 percent of children agreed that using smartphones for a long time is becoming the main reason for conflicts in their family. The special thing is that 94 percent of the children suggested that the parents’ smartphone should have only essential features, like calling, messaging and camera. At the same time, 66 percent children said that they are ready to leave social media if their friends also do so.

Smartphone usage in India has increased rapidly in the last few years due to cheap data plans and affordable smartphones. According to a report by Counterpoint Research, whereas in 2015-16 people used smartphones for an average of 2-3 hours, now this time has increased to 4-5 hours per day. The biggest impact of this increasing usage has been on the youth, who are spending hours of their time trying to gain popularity in the digital world.
How to break up by phone
Smartphone companies are now taking steps to find a solution to this problem. OnePlus has introduced Zen Mode, which helps users turn off their phones for a limited period of time. Similarly, HMD Global has launched Detox Mode, which lets users hide distracting apps in three easy clicks. Additionally, Vivo has partnered with Screen/Life Balance expert Katherine Price, who has written the book How to Break Up With Your Smartphone. Vivo is including features like screen time limit, “do not disturb” mode and app timer in its smartphones, which make digital detox easier.
Some companies believe that the easiest solution to digital detox can be 2G feature phones. Feature phones have limited features, allowing users to focus only on essential tasks, such as calling and messaging. Nokia and HMD Global have made feature phones more useful by adding UPI payment and other useful features.
Digital detox is not just a technological solution but an effort to bring back the balance in our lives. This not only improves mental health but also strengthens family relationships. Getting rid of smartphone addiction is not easy, but small steps, like spending an hour every day without a phone, can help move in this direction. Ultimately, it is up to us to make smartphones a part of our lives and not become dependent on them.
