The red-billed bird, also known as the chakwa, is found in cold regions of north-western Africa, Ethiopia, south-eastern Europe, Central Asia, China and Nepal. When the cold increases, it moves towards India. Its biggest feature is that it is completely vegetarian. Surkhaab eats neither insects nor fish. It eats grass, plant shoots, grains and green algae collected in water. Being a vegetarian, it is called Brahmin bird. It is considered a sacred bird in Buddhism. Due to its religious and cultural importance, it is also mentioned in ancient texts.
